webp.datatype
=============

A picture datatype for WebP images. Once it's installed, every
datatypes-aware program (MultiView, web browsers, paint programs, image
viewers...) can load WebP pictures.

You'll need it for Mastodon clients like FriendSh3ep,
which servers often have WebP images.

It is free and BSD licensed, like Google's libwebp it is built on. We will
not ask money for porting a short open source library to a 40 year old OS
used by a handful of people.

Features
--------
 - lossy (VP8) and lossless (VP8L) WebP
 - alpha channel (32-bit picture with alpha)
 - animated WebP: the first frame is shown
 - 24-bit output. On 8-bit and lower screens, the system's
   picture.datatype does the remapping and dithering, like for any other
   picture format.
 - with picture.datatype V47 (AmigaOS 3.2), the picture is decoded
   straight into picture.datatype's own buffer, so no extra copy is
   needed
 - decoding is all integer code, so no FPU is needed
 - reentrant: several programs can load WebP pictures at the same time

Requirements
------------
 - AmigaOS 3.0 or higher
 - 68020 CPU or higher
 - picture.datatype v43 or higher. It comes with AmigaOS 3.1.4, 3.2, 3.5
   and 3.9, and with the Picasso96 and CyberGraphX packages.

Installation
------------
Double-click Install_WebPDT, then reboot.

Or by hand:

   Copy Classes/DataTypes/webp.datatype SYS:Classes/DataTypes/
   Copy Devs/DataTypes/WebP Devs/DataTypes/WebP.info SYS:Devs/DataTypes/

and reboot, or run: AddDataTypes DEVS:DataTypes/WebP REFRESH

Note: the descriptor is named "WebP", like the one of other WebP
datatypes, so installing this one replaces theirs. Keep a copy of your
old DEVS:DataTypes/WebP if you want to go back.

Testing
-------
webpdtinfo is a small CLI tool that loads a picture through
datatypes.library and prints what it got:

   webpdtinfo picture.webp
   webpdtinfo picture.webp SAVE RAM:picture.ilbm
